Cadillac Ranch Fins at Night – Amarillo, Texas

In the ’70s, Stanley Marsh 3 asked artists from all over to help him build an installation of Cadillacs buried nose-deep in the Texas desert. While we’ve visited the Ranch half a dozen times, it took us over a decade to nail this shot – foiled by clouds, rain, but most of all, the infamous Texas wind, one too many times. But this time, weather cooperated! This time, we couldn’t be deterred! Except for one challenge we thought we’d never encounter in the middle of night, in the middle of nowhere … people. Even at midnight, the Ranch is still a tourist attraction. Between the cell-phone snapping Europeans in tees and shorts (it was about 40 degrees) and the amateur astronomy photographer standing precisely where we needed her not to be, we waited and waited … and waited. Until we finally got the shot we’ve craved and coveted for far too long. Patience is a virtue, dear friends!
